GRIDLOCK

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

Per Merriam-Webster, Gridlock is:

  • a point in a struggle where neither side is capable of winning or willing to give in

  • deadlock, halt, impasse, logjam, Mexican standoff, stalemate, standoff, standstill

For the Global Warming fight, the evidence of trends in greenhouse gas emissions shows roughly a stalemate in America and a real losing battle globally. What is the root cause? Well, one certainly has to think it may well be that highly qualified scientists and economists haven’t been asked to provide a Master Plan, so there is considerable trial and error in both what we are doing and when we are doing it. The topic is very complex and long-range, thereby needing expertise.

For our Dysfunctional Congress, we have drifted over the past few decades and especially lately, into a situation where both our two parties seem to think that their highest calling is to harm the opposing party. Very few advanced democracies have painted themselves into this corner of only having two effective parties; thus, they require negotiation and civility for progress. We citizens must take the reins and work on this root cause of our governmental gridlock and all the ills it causes. There are solutions! For example, the single-member/gerrymandered safe districts concept for the House of Representatives was created by our congress in 1967, so we can request kindly that it reverse this decision and provide for multi-member districts. Would you be sad if gerrymandering and safe districts disappeared? Would more people vote?
