We Must Have More Than Two Parties

Ms. Danielle Allen, a candidate for governor of Massachusetts in 2020, had an Op-Ed in the WSJ on May 7 in which she said “We the people are healthy, but our vehicles of political participation need some attention.” She said that our political parties are the only vehicle available for someone to make a case for election. These two parties own the mechanisms! She went on to make a case that many citizens have turned their backs on the parties. She said that “Our system of representation is in crisis.” #congress

Guess what? There are known solutions. We must have more than two parties! How do we do that? Well, for congress, let’s institute ranked choice voting and multi-member districts. Both stimulate more viewpoints, diversity, and create a fertile path for additional parties. Congress mandated single-member districts for the House in 1967, so it has the power to make these changes. Afterwards, negotiation and compromise among various viewpoints would be necessary, and gerrymandering and single-member districts would be things of the past.
